The other two top juniors also had a big first score, and then low second ones. Lukas Kalkbrenner from Germany was second with a first ride of 140 and James Bebbington with really fun to watch rides had a 154 on his first run. Ten juniors made the cut. Dane paddled really well on his first run and scored high enough to make the cut if he had a second ride the same, but only got 2 points on his second run. Dane was crying after his second run, and wanted to know how he only got 2 points, “what about my back loop and clean blunt?” he asked. Kristine, his mom, explained that he didn’t stick them in the hole, and he said, “you have to stick them in the hole?”. Such young innocence, it is fun to see such a great little kayaker learn the lessons of life. He immediately stopped crying and went about paddling the rest of the course again. The best thing to watch was the young junior Kazuki from Japan. He had a bad first ride but then came back with a killer second ride and nailed a huge air loop halfway through his ride and couldn’t stop smiling the rest of it. He was so excited and knew he made the grade. He really made his Star fly, and his exuberant celebration after his ride will be remembered by everyone watching long after the competition.
