Ah… The Green Race! It is an epic event in so many ways and it tends to captivate us as whitewater paddlers. The community that surrounds this event is far reaching and the show of talent in the race is always extraordinary. It has been said many times over, but it is “the greatest show in all of sports!”

I have served on the volunteer safety team for this race for 8 years now under the direction of Green Race Safety Director, Tommy Hillike. My first 5 years was working/leading the safety crew at Go Left and Die. The past 3 years I have been working with the safety crew in the Gorilla Pit. I considered it an honor to support this race in this way with my mantra of “safe is sexy” in everything I do in my kayaking endeavors. I also try to keep the good practice going throughout the year by continuing to help instruct swift water rescue courses with my local paddling club and the Nolichucky Outdoor Learning Institute for over a decade now.

This year for the 24th annual PURE GOLD edition of the Green Race a special reporter hiked into the Narrows to witness the race firsthand and cover a feature story on the safety crew. Check out her report in the video below.
