Here is a basic instructional video on how to tie down your kayak on a car.

There are two ways in this video that show how to tie down a kayak on a car. I like to use cam straps as you can keep re tighten the straps quite easily.

Firstly hold the buckle in one hand and thread the webbing through the grab loop. Throw the webbing over to the other side of the car. Then thread the webbing under the horizontal of the roof rack. Next throw the end of the webbing back over the kayak and under the webbing then thread it through the cam strap. Pull downwards using your body weight to tighten the webbing. Tie it off with a thumb knot and then wrap the excess around the horizontal and tie it off with a couple of half hitches at the end.

Another alternative is the round the world technique. Start it off the same way, thread the webbing through the grab loop the same way. Thread it under the horizontal and the continue by threading it under the rear roof rack horizontal, thread it through the rear grab loop, thread the webbing under the rear roof rack, then under the front roof rack and thread it in the cam strap and tie it down the same way as before.

My tip is to always thread your straps through the grab loop.
I recommend a 15 foot cam strap for the front and back tie down technique and a 20 foot cam strap for the round the world technique.
